JAE: Design by Decoding - Exposing Environments Mediated by “Cultural Software”
Peer-reviewed article in the Journal of Architectural Education, examining the role of what Lev Manovich has termed 'cultural software' in architectural education and design research practices. I argue that students and educators alike should be more invested in the implicit ideologies and protocols that software give us, and that by attempting to 'decode' them we can take back architectural agency from tools that we use every day in design practice.
